Knitwear to dream about |

In my line of work I am always meeting designers. In particular there is something fascinating about meeting a new designer or emerging designer for the first time that you know is going to go far in the fashion industry. It's a moment that I almost don't want to share with anyone else.
I met one of those designers this week. Her name is Laura Theiss. Her passion is knitwear, in particular crochet. She is a designer that is self taught. Her instinct from a young age (15 years) was to knit sweaters as she wanted to wear more fashionable clothes that wasn't available in native Lithuania. Today, having qualified at St Martins, and having turned down internships by the likes of Diane Von Furstenberg, she is making a go of launching her own label.

Her current collection was inspired by beautiful women in Samurai warrior costumes that she saw at the Hiroshima's Samurai museum in Japan. Laura then used her imagination and took one of the warriors called Tomoe Gozen from the 12th century on a journey that covered such places as Tokyo – structure and pleats, Shanghai – bright colours, tassels and ended up in London – tartan. Such imagination is necessary to start and complete a designers collection.
When Laura comes to see me she turns up with a big folder that is covered in brightly coloured tassels, I immediately ask what it is and she tells me it is her box that contains her fabrics samples. I feel like a little girl again and ask to see immediately inside. The box contains lots of crochet, lots of coloured wool and lots of new ideas that I can't wait to see Laura use in her designs. We talk about the industry, we talk about London Fashion Week but mostly we talk about her passion of crochet itself. I end our meeting on a high from the creative talking, and at the same time my 16 month old daughter wakes up from her afternoon nap. Suddenly I am thinking that my daughters dressing up box (that I am collecting all the time for), mmm I might just add in some crochet tablecloths - you never know she may get inspired too!
